How much space does a stairlift need?
There is no single inch count. Makers publish a minimum stair width, how far the rail sits from the wall, and how deep the chair is when it is folded versus when someone is sitting in it. The tightest point on your stairs is the one that matters, not the widest tread.
Need A Stairlift does not sell, install, rent, or service stairlifts. We collect competing installer quotes for you, free. Installers never get your last name, phone, or email.
Stair width, from the furthest obstruction
Stannah's US dimensions page lists a 27 inch minimum for a typical straight lift. Curved jobs are listed at 27 to 30 inches, depending on the rail path. Width is measured from the furthest obstruction, so a handrail, molding, or newel post counts.
The same company's requirements page talks in slightly rounder numbers: about 28 inches for many straight lifts and about 30 inches for many curved ones, with custom work possible closer to 27 inches. That is why two brochures from one brand can disagree by an inch. The survey, not the brochure, decides.
Acorn publishes different floors. Its measurement guide and width FAQ say the Acorn 130 needs about 26 inches of staircase width, and the Acorn 180 needs about 27.5 inches so the rider can swivel. Acorn still wants a survey before anyone calls that a yes.
If the stairs turn, you are in curved-rail territory. That is a different product, with a custom rail. More on that in do stairlifts work on curved stairs.
Folded, unfolded, and the rail itself
The chair is deepest while you ride. When the seat, arms, and footrest fold, other people still need a path up the stairs.
Stannah's straight figures: 14.5 inches from the wall with the chair folded, 25.9 inches unfolded, and the outside edge of the rail about 6 inches from the wall. Its compact-stair page says some lifts can go on stairs as narrow as 27 inches if the survey agrees.
Savaria's 2026 Handicare 4000 brochure (curved) lists a 16 inch fold-up depth and a 27.4 inch fold-out depth, with the rail about 5 inches from the wall. The Handicare 1000 straight brochure lists 15 1/8 inches folded and 25 5/8 inches unfolded. Fold-out numbers grow if you pick the 440 lb option or arm spacers.
Bruno's 2026 Elan brochure does not publish a minimum stair width. It does say the vertical rail installs within 5 inches of the wall, and that the armrests, seat, and footrest fold to leave more open stair. Bruno's 2026 guide repeats the fold-up point and the optional folding rail at the bottom.
Stannah's older requirements write-up says a folded chair typically takes about 7 1/2 inches of stair width, though curves and wall protrusions change that. Use that as a ballpark, not a tape-measure substitute.
Landings, doors, and the extra rail at the bottom
Width is only half of it. You also need room to get on and off.
Stannah says a standard rail often sticks out about 18 inches past the bottom step. Furniture, a door swing, or a busy hall can make that a problem. A retractable or folding rail lifts that bottom section out of the way when the chair is parked upstairs. Bruno lists a manual or power folding rail as an Elan option for the same reason.
At the top, the seat has to swivel and lock so you stand onto the landing, not over the drop. If a door sits right at the top nosing, the installer has to prove the chair can finish its run and still let the door open. Stannah's requirements page walks through both door cases.
Headroom is usually fine on a main stair. Basement flights with a low soffit are the usual exception. If you duck walking up, say so on the form.
The rail bolts to the stair treads, not the wall. That is in how to install a stairlift. You do not need a load-bearing wall on the rail side.
What to put on the quote request
You do not need a surveyor's tape before you start a quote request. Photos do the first pass. Still, a few numbers help installers quote the right chair:
- Wall-to-wall width at the narrowest point, including the handrail if it sticks in
- Whether the flight is one straight run or has a turn or landing
- Doors, radiators, or furniture at the top or bottom
- Rough landing depth, especially if the bottom rail would sit in a walkway
- Where the nearest unswitched outlet is
Need A Stairlift gathers those quotes from companies that cover your ZIP code, free. They see city, stair photos, and rider details that affect fit. They do not get your last name, phone, or email. You read the email, then you call the company you want, with the quote number.
A national brand can still quote $7,000 or more for a straight lift that a local installer prices for much less. Space options such as a folding rail or a slimmer chair should show up as line items, not as a surprise on install day. Our FAQ has the same comparison point.
If the stairs are tight, say that on the form. Ask each quote what minimum width they used, how far the rail sits from the wall, and whether a folding rail is in the price.
