Frequently Asked Questions
Why we charge for quotes, how it works, and what homeowners ask before buying or renting a stairlift.
About Need A Stairlift
Why should I pay Need A Stairlift to get my quotes?
Because “free” quotes usually aren't free. You pay with your phone number. On many free quote sites, the moment you press submit, your name, phone number and email can be passed to several dealers, and the calls, texts and emails can start right away. Then comes the in-home appointment: a salesperson at your kitchen table, often pushing you to sign that same day.
Our $50 pays for the opposite: privacy and no pressure. We do the calling for you. Installers get your stair details and photos, but never your last name, phone number or email, so they can't call you, email you or show up at your door. Their quotes come back to us, and we send them to you to compare in peace. You decide who to call, and when.
It's backed by a simple guarantee: at least 3 installer quotes, or a full refund.
What does the $50 include?
One flat fee covers the whole job. We review your request, contact stairlift installers that serve your area with your stair details and photos, collect their quotes and email them to you along with your quote number. Each quote includes the brand of stairlift, its features, warranty information, the installation timeframe and a brochure.
What if you can't get me at least 3 quotes?
You get your $50 back in full. That's our guarantee: at least 3 installer quotes, or a full refund.
Will installers call me or come to my home?
No. We contact the installers for you, and they never get your phone number or email, so they can't call or email you. No one comes to your home unless you invite them. When you're ready, you call the company you like and give them your quote number.
What information do installers get about me?
Installers get your city, ZIP code, your stair details and photos, and rider details that affect the fit (such as weight, height and mobility). Your last name, phone number and email stay with us.
Do you sell or share my information?
No. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your phone number or email with installers or marketers. See our Privacy Policy for the details.
Why do you need photos of my stairs?
Photos of the bottom landing, the top landing, the narrowest point and the nearest electrical outlet let installers price the job without a sales visit to your home. Clear, well-lit photos mean more accurate quotes.
How do I get my quotes?
- Fill out our 5-step form about your home, your stairs and who will ride the stairlift, and add your stair photos. It takes about 5 minutes on a phone.
- Pay $50 on our secure payment page.
- We review your request.
- We contact installers that serve your area with your stair details and photos.
- We email you the quotes to compare.
Does it work in my area?
We take requests from anywhere in the United States and contact installers that serve your ZIP code. If your area is too remote for us to get you quotes, you get a full refund.
Can I buy directly from the installer I choose?
Yes. You choose the company, and you buy directly from them. Call the one you like, give them your quote number and the price you were quoted. We don't sell or install stairlifts ourselves. Quotes are estimates based on your answers and photos, so the installer you choose will confirm a firm price, usually with a quick site visit.
How does payment work? Is it secure?
After you finish the form, the review step shows the $50 fee and our guarantee before you pay anything. You then pay on a secure payment page run by our payment provider, Zoho Payments. We never see or store your full card number. We start working on your request once your payment is received.
How do refunds work?
If we can't get you at least 3 installer quotes, we refund your $50 in full. You can also ask for a refund before we start contacting installers. Just email info@needastairlift.com with your quote number.
Ready to get quotes?

How much does a stairlift cost?
It depends on the brand, the features, whether your staircase is straight or curved, and where you live. Curved stairlifts cost more because the rail is custom-bent. That's why comparing quotes for your actual stairs helps.
Does Medicare or Medicaid pay for stairlifts?
Original Medicare does not cover stairlifts. They're considered home modifications, not durable medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited home-modification benefits. Many state Medicaid waiver programs may cover stairlifts for qualifying individuals. Veterans may be eligible through the VA's HISA grant or SAH/SHA programs.
How long does installation take?
Most straight stairlift installations take 2–4 hours. Curved stairlifts can take a full day because the rail is custom. Installers do not need to modify your walls. The rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall.
Straight vs. curved stairlift: which do I need?
Straight stairlifts run on a single straight rail. They're the most common and most affordable. If your staircase has any turns, landings or curves, you need a curved stairlift with a custom-bent rail. Curved is significantly more expensive but works on almost any staircase shape.
What if my staircase has a turn at the top or bottom?
You need a curved stairlift. Curved rails need an exact measurement, so expect the installer you choose to measure in person before a final price.
Can I rent a stairlift instead of buying?
Often, yes. Many installers offer monthly rentals. Rental stairlifts are often refurbished units. This is a good option for short-term recovery (post-surgery) or if you are not ready to commit. Some rental fees apply toward a purchase later.
Are permits required?
Usually not. Stairlifts generally don't modify the structure of the home, so most places don't require a building permit. Rules vary, so your installer will confirm for your area.
What is the warranty on a stairlift?
Many manufacturers offer long warranties on the motor and gearbox, with separate limited warranties on parts and electronics. Also ask the installer about the labor warranty: what happens if something fails in year 2?
How loud are stairlifts?
Modern stairlifts are quiet, roughly like a refrigerator hum. Battery-powered models (which most are) are silent when stationary.
Can stairlifts be installed outdoors?
Yes. Outdoor-rated stairlifts have weatherproof seats and covers. Expect to pay more than for an indoor model. Useful for porches, garage steps or basement walkouts.
How do I know if I (or my parent) actually need a stairlift?
Common signs: avoiding the stairs, holding both rails, pain climbing, fear of falling, or a recent fall. An occupational therapist can do a home assessment.
