Can you get a stairlift if you have a narrow staircase?

By Need A Stairlift · · 4 min read

Often, yes. The limit is the tightest point on the flight, including the handrail, not the widest tread. Several makers publish a floor around 27 inches for many straight chairs. That is a brochure number. The survey still decides.

What "narrow" means on a brochure

Stannah's US compact-stair page says lifts can fit stairs as narrow as 27 inches. Its dimensions page lists 27 inches for a typical straight lift, measured from the furthest obstruction. Curved jobs are listed at 27 to 30 inches, depending on the rail path. Outdoor Stannah figures go to 26 inches.

The same company's requirements page talks in rounder numbers: about 28 inches for many straight lifts and about 30 inches for many curved ones, with custom work possible closer to 27 inches. Two pages from one brand can disagree by an inch. Use the tape on your stairs, then let the installer confirm.

If you already measured for space, how much space does a stairlift need has the folded and unfolded figures. This page is the yes-or-no: can a chair go on a tight flight at all.

Slim chairs and perch seats

The chair is deepest while you ride. When the seat, arms, and footrest fold, other people still need a path.

Savaria calls the K2 a fit for narrow staircases. Folded depth is 10 3/4 inches from the wall with the standard L seat, or 11 1/4 inches with the V seat. The Handicare 1100 folds to 12 5/8 inches. Savaria's 2026 comparison table flags both the K2 and the 1100 for narrow stairs. The Handicare 1000 is bulkier: 15 1/4 inches folded.

Bruno's Elan uses a narrow vertical rail so the chair sits close to the wall. Bruno's 2026 guide says indoor straight rails are the narrowest in that lineup, and the arms, seat, and footrest fold when parked. Bruno does not publish a minimum stair width on that Elan page.

If sitting takes too much width, or the rider cannot bend to a seat, a perch or standing chair is the other path. Savaria's home-accessibility guide puts a perch seat on the Handicare 1000 (straight) and 4000 (curved). Stannah's compact page points to the Sadler as a standing stairlift for the same kind of squeeze. Those seats change the ride. They do not fix a flight that is too tight for the rail.

Handrails, doors, and which side of the stairs

Stannah says a stairlift can go on either side. Pick the side with more clearance. A handrail on the rail side may have to come off. Width is measured from the furthest obstruction, so that rail counts until it is gone.

A door at the bottom is a different problem than a skinny flight. The rail often sticks past the last tread. Stannah lists a retractable rail for that. Savaria lists a flip-up or power hinge on some models, and a slide track on the 1100. Those options should show up as line items, not as a surprise on install day.

Turns still need a curved rail. That product is custom, and the minimum width is usually a bit higher. See do stairlifts work on curved stairs.

What to put on the quote request

You do not need a perfect measurement to start a quote request. Photos of the tightest point, the handrail, and both landings do the first pass. Still, write the wall-to-wall width at the pinch point, including the handrail.

Need A Stairlift gathers those quotes from companies that cover your ZIP code, free. They see city, stair photos, and rider details that affect fit. They do not get your last name, phone, or email. You read the email, then you call the company you want, with the quote number.

A national brand can still quote $7,000 or more for a straight lift that a local installer prices for much less. Our FAQ has that comparison point. Slim chairs and folding rails should be on the quote, not added later.

If the stairs are tight, say that on the form. Ask each quote the minimum width they used, the folded depth of the chair they priced, and whether a perch seat or a folding rail is in the number.
